    Hi guys,

I would like to deploy a couple of thin clients to the house. I have Win Server 2008 for thin client sessions and it also acts as DHCP and firewall. Therefore, RDP is the protocol being used.

My home network is gigabit ethernet.

Are there devices available that will now allow full motion video and streamed video (like bbc iplayer) to play smoothly on the thin client device with the RDP protocol?

I want to be able to give the kids access to CBeebies and iplayer but centralise apps and locked down desktop on the Win 2008 server. Would you be inclined to use a local browser instead, or is it possible to stream smoothly?

Any advice or alternative thought gratefully received, plus any recommended Wyse devices.

    Cheers,
    Pete.

    Hi Pete.

You could use Wyse TCX to get multi media but there is a cost in doing this for home. Also the kids will want flash and a bunch of other stuff. Rather than give them the locked down 2008 session why not use ESXi (free) or other free virtualization software and and mount a few XP Pro VM’s. Small footprint and if you snap shot them you can “roll back” when the kids break the desktop?

    Cheers,

    TT,

Are you saying that flash performs adequately over RDP from a VM guest to a XPe terminal?

As opposed to a V10L connecting to a 2003 TS session, which has lousy flash performance.

Flash has become the bane of my thin client existence. i would love to find a solution to this.

Currently flash is not running on Wyse or VMware smoothly.
But Wyse has shown a working solution in Las Vegas VM-World last month.
The solution is supposed to be released as a seperate product in the TCX suite end of this year/early next year.

That’s good to know. I’m looking forward to trying it out.

    Thanks a lot!

    Apologies for the hi-jack.

Are you saying Adobe flash on these devices is a no go at the moment? I seem to be able to play basic (SWF I think) graphics stuff, but anything like video content it just says no. As for youtube, forgettaboutit!

I’ve been playing with it for a little while, trying upgrades etc, but don’t seem to be getting any joy, should I give up?

    Rgds,

    Harry
