I tried to update an S30 to 581_PXE image via FTP.
The device started downloading and reflashing itself OK but on the reboot the display freezed on OS loading (the green bar stays on 1/4).
Tried rebooting, left the S30 on all night long, it doesn’t go much further than that 🙁

I’m looking for a way (actually doubting that there IS a way) to take control back on this device.
Any suggestion would be very appreciated…

No worries, there is a way to get this device back to live.
Let’s start with some easy things to test:
    – When you seee the Wyse BIOS screen, press “Del” and enter “Fireport” to get to the BIOS. Reset the BIOS to factory settings
    and/or
    – While CE is booting try to press “g” to reset CE to factory defaults.

If this does not help we can reflash the unit via PXE. But I will explain this in the next post, if the easy tests fail.

Hi ConfGen, thanks for your immediate response.
I tried to reset factory defaults via BIOS, it changed the boot priority and that’s just good because now the device looks up in DHCP for a PXE image.

I already registered the image in my WDM server (under the Package manager/Images) but the S30 won’t run it and finally comes to the freezing Winterm Boot screen.

I’ve read about Ip Helpers to get PXE image working but honestly I barely know what we’re talking about…

OK, so you have resetted the BIOS but the unit still does not boot, correct?
You have added the image to your WDM server and have assigned it to the unit.
After the assignment you have to go to the package manager in WDM, right click the package and select “Roll to boot”. Now reboot the unit.
    It should grap the image.
IP helper are only needed in a routed environment. As long as WDM and client are in the same subnet, there is no problem.

Maybe I should have given more infos on this device: it came from a customer, not in our LAN.
I put it in our subnet but it never signed on and register in our WDM.
I added the device manually in WDM via device name, MAC and model but the screen on the icon is black like it’s not online.
I made a netscan, there isn’t an IP assigned for its Mac Address.
However I tried to assign the image, tried to reebot it immediately.
It doesn’t seem to be manageable from WDM as long as I can see.
Other devices has red or green screen on icon and I can reboot/wake on lan/change infos.

    Still the situation is:
S30 boots and seek dhcp image for 30/40 seconds in vain
It gives the error “P53- no boot filename received”.

Before rebooting/starting the S30 you have to move the deployed package in the Package Manager to “Roll to boot” by right clicking the job.

    Nothing changed.
The S30 is still looking for dhcp address, not finding the PXE image.
It seems like the device can’t sign on the network but I checked the cables and a S30 in the same place works just fine.
I’m starting to think that somehow the network properties went damaged with the bad firmware update.

Maybe there’s a way to re-image it via usb?
Wyse Imager 1.4 or something like that?

Try to reboot the WDM server and the test again.

I tried several rebooting of WDM and device, now the icon of the S30 is green in the management the IP is 0.0.0.0 and there’s no way to take remote control of it (no shadow/reboot/wake on lan).
There’s a specific way to identify a device without knowing the IP?
The MAC address doesn’t seem enough, the green icon of the device shows it online even if I turn it off and reset WDM.

Since i dont’ see any other way to control it again via Network the USB is the only way to re-flash it?

(sorry for the delay of the reply)

Check locally on the S30s Control Panel-Rapport (WDM) applet, if the IP of the WDM server is entered correct there.

Maybe I didn’t explain well… the S30 doesn’t boot correctly to the WinCe.net screen, it stops on the loading of the OS and there’s no way to make it start.
It stays there, hours and hours, with the green bar that makes no progress…

Sorry, I have read through the whole topic again.

Looks like Simple Imager could be a solution for you. Have you already tried it? You can download it for free from wyse.com.

What image have you registered? Maybe it isn’t a PXE image?

It is a PXE image, i already upgraded several S30s with it but they were correctly online (not damaged OS).
When I have time I should try to connect directly to a WDM PC with a crossed lan cable and see if it works this way.
    Thanks anyway..

    OK, try the following:
    – Push the imaging job the defect S30 again
    – Go to Update Manager-Scheduled Packages
    – right click the imaging job and select “Roll to boot”
    – now boot the S30
