Hi. I’m new to Thin clients. Can someone please help?

I have a Wyse Winterm model WT9450XE that has been retired from my place of work. It is 192MB and has a build of WinXPe installed. I want to install squid transparent proxy onto it or possibly Linux and Squid.
Being unfamiliar with configuring lite clients I wasn’t sure how to disable the NVRAM write protect, I logged on as administrator and found what looked like an option under administative tools that I changed. The winterm now won’t boot saying that hal.dll is missing or corrupt.

I have done some research on this site and downloaded a self extracting firmware B330Wyse9450.exe The readme says XPE Build 330 SP1 US/ANZ 192mb Build for Rapport 4.4″ with a list of patches. I am in New Zealand.
I have also downloaded and installed Wyse Simple Imager V1.7.2.

I have added the firmware file but after clicking submit and powering on the client, the client attempts to boot from lan and then stops at the hal.dll error message. The SWI documentation says I need to install modules in Windows Server 2003. I only have an XP PC and a Windows7 PC. I also have a Thecus N4200pro NAS If I can somehow utilise that.

How can I re-image this without server 2003 please?
Alternatively, how can I get this to boot off something else? There is a 44 pin connector in the base of the device. It isn’t the correct pin spacing for IDE. What is this connector compatable with?

I believe that this device won’t support imaging from USB.
I have Bios access and the administrator password.
    Boot from LAN is selected.

    Can someone guide me please?

    Regards Allen.

What do you see when the client starts from LAN and before the hall error?

    Hi. Thanks CG

    I can get into BIOS.

As I said in my original post, I have got this from my place of work where all the Wyseterms have been replaced with either HP desktops or Acer Aspire SFF PCs.
My home environment is not configured to boot from LAN but it may be possible as I have a Thecus N4200pro NAS. It wasn’t booting from LAN in the work environment

    At bootup I get.

    A Wyse Winterm Splash screen
a list of devices which shows the 192MB drive,
    a list of PCI devices

(with Boot from lan enabled in BIOS)

    “Intel UNDI, PXE-2.0 (Build 82)
    Copyright blah
VIA PCI 10/100Mb Fast Ethernet Adapter V1.19 (2001/11/16)
    Client MAC address 00 80 64 40 76 19 GUID: FFFFFFFF-FFFF-FFFF-FFFF-FFFFFFFF
    PXE-M0F No Boot Filename Recieved
    PXE-M0F Exiting Intel PXE ROM”

I think Starting Windows flashes up quickly, then screen clears.

“Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt.
    system32hal.dll
Please re-install a copy of the above file.”

If I can find a way of getting the correct version of the dll back on here I wouldn’t need to reimage it. I havn’t been able to get the wyseterm to boot from USB stick or USB CD/DVD. How can attach a second HDD? What is the connector under the base, it isn’t a standard IDE connector?

I don’t have an NT server environment to run Wyse Simple Imager, only XP home and Win7 Pro. XP Home doesn’t have the IIS addin for the FTP server required for WSI.

Is there a Bootable CD that I can boot one of my desktops into an environment that I can run the WSI tool or other imager?

    Your assistance is appreciated

    Regards Allen.
