My company likes to have standards when implementing a system. We are starting to use more Wyse 3150SE systems and are using Version 5.0 Wyse FR2 Build 559. This is the latest version that I can download from there site.

We are upgrading the firmware via FTP. It works for many of our systems, but for many systems we get Upgrade Failed! After further investigation, there is no memory left or very little, say 10KB.

Even after removing all add-ons, we still receive this message. Furthermore, on other systems where we are able to install this firmware version successfully, even though the system is using the same 32MB flash memory, the free KB reflects differently on each unit; from 10KB to 1200KB.

I would figure if using the same amount of memory and installin the same amount of software, we will get nearly the same amount of free space.

Anybody know what’s going on? I have RMA three of these units recently, but really would like to figure out a fix if it can be done without RMA.

    Any help much appreciated!

    Hi Brian,

3150 is quite old and no longer manufactured so I am a bit surprised you are implementing this unit. The S30 has a very similar motherboard and may be a second option.

And there in lies the issue, the S30 now has 64MB of on board flash and the 3150 typically had 32MB. Now Wyse still make images for the old 3150 but they are pushing the flash use to the limit.

What you need to do is create a “bundled” image that uses a “primer” image. A primer image is a base Wyse CE build with no addons, about 9MB in size. You then bundle in what you want and deploy.

You will need to have WDM to do this, if you don’t download it and start building 🙂

I have almost finished an article on how to create a bundled image and will post it on the front of this site shortly,

    Cheers,

Thanks for your reply as it was helpful. I’m very much looking forward to learning how to create a “bundled” image that uses a “primer” image. If there are any articles/documents I should read to understand more about it, please let me know.

As far as using the 3150SE, the decision was base on $$ as we are buying used models from eBay. We only need to use RDP to connect to a terminal session so until I learn how to create a “bundled” image, we might revert to an older image, Build 541.

I’m in the process of learning how flash memory works. Would it be correct to say that flash memory erodes over time due to the number of read/writes. I’m guessing that some of the cells are no longer available and this is why we are challenge with a few of these Wyse systems that fail to load Build 559 due to no space left.

    Ahh, ebay units…

Personally if you only use RDP look for the Wyse 1200LE – much cheaper and faster units both in boot time and RDP performance.

Yes the flash can get bad sectors but your issue is a very new image that is really built for the 64MB not the 32MB. Bundling will do the trick or download an older image from wyse.com and this should fit,

    Cheers,
