First off, I just found this forum and am excited to find some administrators sharing ideas about the clients I’ve been using for a while now. Kudos to the webmaster! 🙂

We’ve got some training material that is being deployed via web browsers. It takes advantage of Java and Flash. I was wondering if anyone has used the browser on the s30 to do anything like that. I was hoping it would be installed by default, but it wasn’t. Anyone ever done this?

Thanks for any insight you might have, and thanks for a forum to talk about this stuff in!

    Hi Joe and Welcome! 8)

Its shame I have to say no go for your first question. Basically the IE 6 browser in CE should be called “IE6 lite” because its missing a lot.

Microsoft played with MS Java in CE briefly however then Sun sued Microsoft and MS could not longer licence Java. Sun so far have not supported java on CE.

There were some early versions of Flash tried for CE but no recent ones.

So here is whats missing in CE IE:

    – Java
    – ActiveX
    – Flash
    – Shockwave

Quite a list! Really the CE browser is only useful for basic html with a few readers (PDF, Word etc)

Sorry I can’t help more on this – unfortunately CE does not enjoy the wide developer support of Linux and Windows NT,

    Cheers,
    -TT

    Thats a shame.

We don’t allow flash in our Citrix environment, as one of the training sites our users visit eats up 60% of a servers CPU. So I was hoping to allow them access to the site by using the native browser on the thin client.

Is anyone familiar with the s90? I know that has an XPe OS, and I was thinking it might be a bit more “compatible” with the site they’re trying to visit.

    Thanks for the info.

    Hi Joe,

You should me fine with XPe, its the same binaries as in full XP Pro and it comes with Sun Java and you can install flash etc.

Here is a document on how to set up XPe:

    http://www.freewysemonkeys.com/downloads/Wyse%209000%20-%20Administrators%20Evaluation%20Guide-V2.pdf

Get an eval unit and see how it goes,

    Cheers,

    Thanks for the info.

I’ve got a couple demo units that should be showing up today.

    Thanks again for the site!
